Flagstaff
This painting won first prize in the Traditional section at Fairfield Art Festival, and has been used as cover art for the recently released album 'Dead Man's Lullaby' by Jimmy Dowling. Continuing the process of using black and white photos as source material, this is from a photo I took of the storage room in a ship's hull at Flagstaff Hill in Warrnambool, Victoria. Initially it was conceived as a 'technical exercise' based around the works of 17th Century artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Under painted with greens in order that the ochres and browns would have an extra depth and luminescence it is essentially a painting of light, and of a light source not present in the painting.
